In addition to the layer feed and scratch, I buy a small pellet dog food, put it in a bucket with warm water until it is softened and then throw it to the chickens. The birds scramble to eat every morsel. I think it definitely has increased fertility for my birds ... most people that I mail thehatching eggs to say they have excellent hatches ... and I rarely have an egg that doesn't hatch here. I started doing this last year. My 70 something year old uncle told me he feeds his birds dog food every day, and after I saw the chickens I gave him and compared them to mine ... I was sold on the idea. They grow much faster and look so much healthier than those fed only chicken feed. I'm lucky to be able to buy locally packaged dog food for less than $8 for a 40 lb. bag, and the company brags that they use human grade food products in the ingredients ... not that I intend to eat any of it
