So we were going to see if any of our hens would lay on their eggs if we left them in there (we have a rooster). We had one broody hen who started laying on them about 2 1/2 to 2 2/3 week ago. I candled the eggs today to check their development. They were fine and well developed. Later that day I went out there to check for more laid eggs and saw that the broody hen was off of the two eggs. I found one of the eggs laying on its side with the top half broken off. The other egg had fallen out of the nesting box, but it haven't cracked. The cracked egg had traces of blood on it and was completely empty. Does anyone have any idea what happened? I suspect that the rooster flustered the hens and messed with the eggs but, where is the dead chick? Is there any chance that the not cracked egg is still alive? Help.
