How can I tell if an egg is fertilized without breaking it open (which seems to defeat the purpose). I couldn't get in to the chicken coop for about a week because of frozen ground and a wonky door (I was still able to feed and water them because the door was stuck open a couple of inches) when i finally got the door open today there was a nest full of eggs. so is there any way to find out if they've been fertilized so soon after laying? I have a rooster but he's odd, he doesn't even crow.

Well, the only way to confirm without cracking a couple open is to put them in the incubator and see if they develop or not :)
