Hi all! I was wondering if anyone knew about fertilizers for lawns and if chickens might get into the stuff and get sick or anything. I just wanted to put some high nitrogen fertilizer on the grass in the front yard. The yard is fenced but they have gotten in there a couple times. I know a lot of the stuff comes in these little pellets you sprinkle around, I wouldn't think it would taste good, but I wouldn't want them to eat it. Any suggestions would really help. Thanks!

Nyna......If they can get to the fertilizer....it will most likely hurt, or even kill them. Why not use the chicken poo compost on the front yard? I read somewhere....on here...someone made liquid fertilizer, from the poo...but I dont know the composition. I am sure it woud be MUCH safer for your yard, and hens.

Why not use an organic lawn fertilizer instead of toxic chemicals? The lawn/garden/feed stores around here sell plenty of different ones. I noticed something called "Cock-A-Doodle-Do0" lawn fertilizer the other day. Guess what that's made of?

If you absolutely need lawn fertilizer, go for organic.

There's a product made from corn gluten that's a slow release grass fertilizer that also naturally inhibits seeds from sprouting....use it for a year or two twice a year and you'll notice no more weeds either (they depend on seeds to spread, whereas the grass uses rhizomes)....oh and your kids including chickens aren't hurt by it either.
