It's doable, but I'm not sure how cost effective it would be in small scale. I use different feeds for different purposes and some I simply can't justify a ton. So I work to adapt my broiler/grower mix to what ever the current need is.Thank you rjohns39... I live in Jersey. I do have fertrell feed bags near me, I was just interested in making my own feed as it would be more cost effective for me.
Premier 1 sells a nice hammer mill for milling small quantities of grain and I use a clean cement mixer for mixing. Whole grains kept in a cool dark location have the longest shelf life. Whole Roasted Soy will have the shortest of most of them at about six months. If you get fishmeal, buy it from Fertrell (manhaden) and again, cool dark with as little O2 as possible to store it. I use 5 gallon buckets with omni lid and O2 absorber to extend shelf life.
If you'd like some sample recipes and guidelines, start a conversation with me. I also recommend two books to anyone considering this.
My two favorite books for feed are:
- "Commercial Poultry Nutrition" Second edition by S. Leeson and J.D. Summers
- "Feeding Pasture—Raised Poultry" by Jeff Mattocks
