few ?'s about guineas. please give me opinions

Guineas kill snakes. If one finds a snake it calls others and they kill it as a group. We like to keep four dozen or more guineas for insect control and over the years I have come to realize that individuals vary considerably in their vocalizing. Some never seem to stop, I think they like the sound of their own voices. I have been attempting to breed only the less vocal of my birds to see if that makes a difference.

Thanks for the info. What is the least number of guineas I could keep in order to keep snakes under control? I don't usually have a big problem with them, but recently I've had one kill 5 of my young chickens, and I think I may have one eating eggs also. I don't mind guineas, but my hubby is just not crazy about them. Is there one kind that is less vocal than another?

I love my guineas but they are sooo loud! it gets annoying but I learned a trick from the lady I got them from. I just tell them to Shutup and be quiet and they actually stop their honking! Also what helps is to whistle at them and they quiet down a bit. I have never had mine kill a snake but they did help my chickens kill a mole! i might have some pictures of the mole they killed. Ill try to find it tomorrow!

I dont have trouble finding their eggs because mine dont free range. I would like to try it for a day or two in the spring to see how it goes but I just havent ever let them roam yet.

Cody!!

Thanks, Cody. I think I may try to get a few, maybe 3 or 4, and see how they are. I know they are loud, but if they help keep the snake population down, it would be worth it.

My stepdads guineas atacked a broken belt off a mower he threw in the yard, thinking it was a snake. Yes, they will kill snakes. They will range long and far and eat tons of buggies. Another good thing is no one or anything can come in the yard without the guineas letting you know about it.
