FFA hatching!! Quail are reproducing! WOOT!!!

OH BOY was today fun! We candled eggs at the Ag Building and had a carry in lunch while we did this. I showed the kids some of the eggs we candled over the weekend that were bad and what to look for when they are dead or not good from blood rings to black blobs to a little black dot that does not wiggle any longer to a clear egg. I showed them the air cells and explained how they pip and zip and why they call it that.

THENNNN I grossed out the girls! I broke open the call duck egg that quit on day 18 of 28 days. The ag instructor wants to get some formaldehyde and preserve the call duck for future classes. TOO COOL!!!! We also broke open the blob egg and you could see a teenie tiny baby chick like the size of a dime!

In the picture below is the ag instructor and 3 of the kids. The girl that is grossed out and will never eat eggs or cookie dough again is showing us how grossed out she is! LOL

I just wanted you all to see how your eggs are being used! Oh yeah we are candling the ones in the classroom after it gets dark, it was way too bright in the classroom today. I had to candle the icky eggs in a storage room what a hoot!

I'm sorry you have lost so many eggs especially the late ones. I don't feel quite so bad that my incubating attempts are not going well since you are even experienced at this and having some not make it. I had one pip yesterday morning at 2:30. by 2:30 pm it hadnt' come out yet so I opened it up just a little and could tell it was dead. Last night I took out another to check on it and it was also dead. It had died a couple days ago cause it was smaller. I moved the bator last night to try to get the humidity lower and try that. In my basement it wouldn't go below50 and averaged 53. I know we are all anxious to know how the project progresses.

Wow...this is so cool! But what I'm holding out to see is how you are going to keep all these fuzzy buts in order after they hatch. Once they really start moving it will be crazy trying to figure out what breeds and genders you have there. Congrats on your project organization. Yeah, some parts are a bit icky, but wow!

I love the full education aspect of this project. This hands on learning will stay with these kids forever. She may never eat eggs or cookie dough again, but she will remember this instructor, his class and you for a long time to come. I am happy to have been part of this great experience. can you say COLORED LEG BANDS!!!! Already have them on order! LOL

the mutts we don't really care if they all get mixed up, however the pures we have old dressers that were being thrown out and DH is making dividers to put them in so we can keep the pures separate from the non pures. there are not that many different pure breeds so it should(I say that tongue in cheek) should be relatively simple to keep them separated. And rubbermaid tubs are your friends too. Aquarium tanks work great and labels labels labels!​

Sooooo eeek no coturnix chick from me yet picture? I'm curious what color it is, even if you just discribe the color i'll be able to tell you. Does it have defined black stripes on a tan yellow body? If so it's a normal brown. If it's dark almost black with red tints and no other oclor it's a tibetan. If it's dark almost black with red tints and has a yellow throat, and chest it's a tuxedo.
