I have now lost two youngish laying hens, who both keeled over suddenly many months apart. The vet autopsied both. He said they had chronic bacterial infections that slowly caused fibrosis and affected their organs. Chicken 1 died of fibrosis in intestins; chicken 2 died of fibrosis of lungs and heart. How do I prevent this???

Hi,
So sorry for your loss!

Were these siblings? I ask as one cause of fibrosis can be genetic.

Did the vet bring up ascites?

It can also be caused by environmental things like their bedding, soil, feed, water, and bird droppings.

Not sure exactly which thing would have caused it, but I'd suggest looking around where they are during the day and where they sleep for something that could be a problem. I also would get them on probiotics. That should help the flora in their digestive tract.
