These are my 5 day old BBS and Barred rocks on their first trip "outside". I inverted my sons baseball backstop and unrolled chicken wire around it. It made a perfect, safe place for them to peck around. They loved it!!

Oh how cute!! Looks like their playing baseball already. Teams in the dugout, everyone on their bases, lets play ball!

Um, are the chicks small enough to slip through the chicken wire? You'll need to keep an eye out for that, if they are.

They tried, but they were just a bit too big. I was BBQing on the grill and was sitting out there with them the whole time (enjoying a cold adult beverage). I am not brave enough to ever let me little ones out without me sitting there watching them.

Ive never had chicks so small that they could slip thru chicken wire. Ive even had day olds in it, and they can't begin to get thru it.

Whew! I've got bantam chicks and it's amazing what small spaces they can squeeze through. I had to reconfigure my brooder the first day to prevent escapes.

I was the same way but I let mine free range when they were that young. I don't let them free range anymore since they are in the coop outside.

Our dog wouldn't think twice about killing a chick/chicken. No matter how many times you said no or yelled or anything. Our dog is a dachshund and they are well known for stubbornness.....

Good luck with your chicks.
