fight for the west???

Not nearly specific enough...fight with who, over what....the Louisiana Purchase? The Indian Wars? The War of 1812? The French and Indian Wars? The Mexican American War? 54'40" or Fight? The land rushes in Oklahoma and South Dakota? What west? When West?

The west moved along with the country. At one time Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Tennessee were considered the west.

By the 1890s most of the Indian wars were over....however bad things were happening with the Dakota Souix and reservation lands....problems that came in large part from gold being found in the Black Hills.

The Dakota had an "uprising" in the 1890s. They left reservations and were forced back on them. The official US policies were sending to little food to reservations, removing children and suppressing Indian language and enforcing farming as the only legitimate lifestyle. The massacre at Wounded Knee happened about that time too.

The Oklahoma Land Rush happened about that time, mostly somewhat before. This was the result of the US government breaking treaties, and opening up Oklahoma for settlers.

I think a look around the internet and the library will land you a lot of good information.

Not sure on the date but the saga of Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce is an interesting study.

KristyHall is the one to talk to on BYC she knows alot about the subject.
