Filthy Coop Condition

My coop sits right on the ground. This is a cultural thing. For some reason some people think the coop has to be elevated. I don't know why?

I do clean the coop periodically, but I use the poop for fertilizer on my citrus trees. Does that mean that you will not eat my oranges?

i have yet to see scalding water that stays perfectly clean and you are completely submerging the bird into that lovely water.... that said, i would more than likely politely decline (i'd think of an excuse

) based on principle as well, as jenny said.

LOL Rufus.....I can relate. We use our chicken and quail poop (get lots of it

) in , our gardens. We sell LOTS of tomaotes, been said to have the best in our area. Personally, I think it's the poop.

Commercial chicken houses are right on the ground.... conditions much like you describe.

Use my chicken poop with sheep and goat poop (A very smelly mix) on onions, courgettes and beans and I have the biggest veg. for many miles around. They taste very good, too!

Don't be squeamish folks!

My coop is also on the ground and its not as dirty as some might think, probably cleaner and I only clean out twice a year once in the end of fall and again at the beginning of spring. We use the deep litter method with DE and just add a couple bales of pine shavings when it needs it the chickens do the rest. I have 2 that are above the ground, what a pain have to clean them at least once a week. With the roo's we grow for meat they are on the ground in an open pen and gets moved once or twice. There is nothing wrong with the meat, if you are concerned why not politely tell him he is not raising his chickens up to your standards and see what he says. As for store bought chicken they are in horrible conditions and most still eat them. Just my 2 cents.

Exactly.

The contamination happens when killing. If the birds were full of sores I wouldnt eat them, but from what you have said it sounds okay. Do the chickens have room to run around? I bet they are happy enough as long as they have room and food. Chickens do NOT mind sitting in poop lol.

This would be my choice. I know that the truth of the matter is that store bought chickens are kept in poor conditions, but thought that a lot of the reasons folks raised and processed their own birds was so that they knew the birds were being treated in a more humane manner before slaughter. I mean, financially, I doubt most folks put less than $5 a bird (including feed/time/processing) into raising a meat bird...

so I doubt it's to save money.
