Hello all, we are in the final stages of our new coop, it is 12 x 14 and am planning on using the deep litter method and am wondering what type of litter you all use. We need to go the least expensive route. I am seriously considering sand but i'm not sure what would be the most cost effective and the easiest to maintain.

I am planning on posting pics after we have finished it, it maybe a month before the completion date. DH has only one day a week to work on the coop so it has been a long process, but I see a light at the end of the tunnel.

Thanks in advance!

Go to TSC and buy enough pine shavings to cover the floor about four inches deep. Then find where you can buy food-grade diatomaceous earth to sprinkle over the shavings occasionally. Use the deep litter method, compost it in the fall, and put the compost on your garden in the spring.

Also a good heavy duty garden rake for easy clean out
