Well, Miss Pidge did an excellent job on hatching her babies DH says we need to take her out for a steak this weekend. Here is how it worked out.
She went broody after laying 10 beautiful white eggs. She wouldn't get off the nest. I put 11 eggs from our Buttercup Roo, RIR Roo and SLW roo, mixed with White rocks and Black Sex links under her. We noticed 2 additional eggs layed under her 5 days after the start.
She had a total of 13 eggs under her after sitting for 6 days. On day 21 she hatched a cutie little butter cup babie chick, then another day 22, and by day 29 she'd hatch a total of 6 cute little mixed mutts, and had one die at hatch for a total of 7.
Today I got home from work and Miss Pidge was off the nest and eating, drinking and socializing in the run, it was cold today only 50. I knew she still had 6 eggs under her this morning, I went to her nest and sure enought there were 6 very cold eggs.
I almost tossed them into the woods then I rememeber DH wanted to know what was in them. I set them aside til he got home. He took the eggs to the edge of the woods and cracked them one by one. We had a total of 5 none fertile and 1 undeveloped embryo. So out of 13 eggs she hatched 6 heathly, 1 died at hatch, 1 undeveloped and 5 infertile. I calcutated out of 10 eggs we would get 4-5 healthy chicks. I wasn't too far off.
It's so good to see her out of the nest eating, drinking and socializing!
Now I have 6 mutts, 15 new bantams in the brooder and 15 eggs in the bator, where to put them all......we're designing a bantam coop and run as I speak. I think he's catching the bug, ha ha.
