Finally! A Pip! HATCHED! PICS ADDED!

ok, now when you catch your breath, Cyn, and have a moment....how do you get a splash to begin with? What two color birds will produce the first splash? Now you have me intriqued to creating splashes if possible? I am going to try to breed my giant blue cochin to buff orp and see what happens? I, personally, love the feathered feet/legs. I do have a blue e.e. with some gold in her...very little gold. I just called her a grey chicken until I learned colors on here.

Carrie, you get a splash by breeding two blues or a splash to a blue or, of course, a splash to a splash. My blue trio produces blues most often, with blacks coming in second then rarely, a splash. This is my first splash in awhile and since it came from Skye's egg, I'll assume that she is more likely to throw a splash than Velvet. Velvet just had another baby hatch and I think it's black, but still too wet to tell. BIG babies these guys produce.

The pullet I have from your eggs is a really dark blue. Very beautiful and that egg came from Velvet. I cant wait till spring.

Thanks Cyn, I was wondering what would happen if I bred my blue cochin to my blue ee. I guess I will keep on till I get a splash from them, too. ha ha

After the power came back on, thank goodness, it stayed on! I am running on empty, though.
The hatch is over finally. Two of Velvet's three babies made it, Skye's two, and Caroline's two. Six of nine. The last one of Velvet's hadn't absorbed the yolk and died without pipping its shell. We finally pipped it for him, but he was very weak, just cheaped quietly and passed on. Lexie, my Barred Rock, had two and neither made it, I feel sure due to her extended molt and her depleted system. I was pushing it trying to hatch more of her babies, I guess (Don't worry, ZuniBee! Your BR eggs with your package I'm sending will be mostly, if not all, my Amanda's! I have one of Mandy's eggs in my bator on Day 13 right now doing great.)
I'll have to get back to you on the colors in a couple of days. I think the Blue Orp/Buff Brahma crosses are one each black and blue and I think I got all three colors of my Orps- black, blue and splash. ((Doing the Dance of Joy on the Splash!))
The last baby that hatched is still in the hatcher drying off and when she's in with the other five in the brooder, 15 will go in the hatcher since tomorrow is their Day 19. Of those 15, 10 came from helmstead's Barred Rock flock, one is Lexie's, two are my Ameraucana Charlotte's, and two are Blue Orpingtons, both Skye's. Ooh, dare I hope for another splash?!

Kate, there are so many factors that contribute to a good hatch, even without the extreme stress of shipping involved. I have some 100% hatches and some a good deal less successful, but I'm not racing anyone. We just all do our best and hope it's good enough.

I know what you mean, my class bought eggs twice in Oct and Nov off of Ebay and didn't get a single hatch out of either one. We broke open the eggs to see if there was any development at all and most didn't even look fertile on the one batch, the others I think suffered in shipping.
This time we will order from one of you on BYC that has eggs, that way I'm sure that we won't be wasting our money again, the kids work hard to raise the funds we need to make the purchase in the first place!
With all the hatches going on right now on BYC I feel a lot better about our next attempt!
Kate

I sure hope your next classroom hatch produces some cute little fuzzies! The babies I just hatched are so huge, you wouldn't believe they came out of eggs at all! Combining a Blue Orp, a very large breed anyway, with a Brahma, of all things, sure does produce little butterballs! They are so beautiful, especially with the little "fur boots" they got from their mommy.
If I disappear from the board early tonight, I have collapsed from "Hatching Exhaustion".
