I had almost given up hope since they are 23 weeks today. I am not sure which one laid it and it wasn't in the nest box but I am happy. It was under the roost so I think whoever laid it was a little surprised herself. It has a crack in it from where it landed in the sand but I'm still happy. I have fluffed up the nest boxes this morning with more bedding and each have a brown wooden egg in them. Hope they figure out that that is where eggs go so they don't all end up cracked. HOw do you get them to lay in the nest boxes?

Yeah - I'd say your pullet was as surprised as anyone...lol. You're doing what needs to be done - egg in the nestbox. If they haven't been exploring the nest boxes already, you can place them inside and show them the egg(s) just to be certain they see everything. If they freerange, you might want to keep them in the run over the next few days... Congrats on your egg!

Congratulations! There's nothing like that first egg! I just got my first one on Monday - and I still have six hens who were 23 weeks old y esterday who haven't laid one yet. So we're in the same boat. Instead of layers - we got de-layers! LOL!

By the way - my first egg wasn't in a nest box either. The hen scratched out a "nest" in the shavings on the coop floor. However before she did that, she explored two of the nest boxes - kicking out the fake eggs and stirring things up a bit. I'm still waiting on the second egg. :)

I am still waiting. I let mine free range and I do watch them in the day. I think some one checked out a nest but it could have been one of my two old lady( as I call them). Mine are not to red yet but soon.
