I finally finished my coop and thought I'd share a few photos. I live in a residential area and only wanted enough hens to provide eggs for my family... so I decided to only get 3 hens. We decided to make the coop look more like a playhouse so it would fit in the 'hood better... not that many people will be able to see it. I initially planned to paint it something more neutral, but to help smooth things over with my wife (who isn't crazy about the who idea of having chickens), I let her pick the color... she wanted red. (I think the red looks good) My 4 yr old daughter wanted pink... but I have my limits!
It's right behind the house, but it's located where you can't see it from inside. This is the side you see when you step off the patio... it's right around the corner. The "window" on the left is for ventilation and has hardware cloth and screen attached inside. The window on the right is access to the nest.
Here's a better view of the run. I've still got some work to do on it. The ground drops off a lot on one corner... so I'm going to have to fill that in with something. Either rip a board at an angle or fill in some dirt and line it with those landscaping bricks (whatever they're called). We pulled them from another place in the yard and have quite a few more. I may redo the whole thing eventually. Now that I have everything in place, I'm wishing it was tall enough to walk in (it's only 3' high)
And the inside of the coop. The nest box and lower perch are removable (held by wingnuts). And the whole bottom slides out for easy cleaning. You can barely see it (above and to the left of the nest)... but there's another vent on the back wall.
And here are the girls. My 4yr old named the Barred Rock Cruella (she's a big 101 Dalmatians fan). My wife named the lighter colored RIR "Yella" (ya know, like a synonym for "chicken"). And I haven't named the other one yet...
