Just got my babies this morning from MPC- all 5 were in good health, and energetic. I got 1 buff orpington, 1 australorp, 1 easter egger 2 Wyandottes- one gold laced, one silver laced. Things are going well, they seem happy in their brooder, drinking and eating. My only question is my Buff Orpington was sort of nipping at the others feets and feathers. Should I be concerned? Now that there is food, she didn't seem to be doing it as much.

So excited, I've waited over a year to get chickens!

The instinct is to scratch and peck at stuff on the ground. If there is nothing else there, they peck at feet.

Adorable!

You can also try sprinkling their food around a little bit. Mine did some foot pecking when they first arrived too but they stopped after they kicked their food around enough. They scattered it pritty good on their own, so you may not need to intervene at all.

They are just adorable! We just got 28 chicks from McMurray Hatchery on Monday and are having so much fun:) Can't wait to post some of my own pics". Have you had any losses yet?

It seems like scattering food and settling down helped a lot. They are doing well- sleeping on and off it seems, probably tired after that trip! I see them nip a little, but it seems playful, and they all sleep cuddled together. And I haven't seen my buff orpington nibble the others feathers since it discovered the food and water.

thebreakfastclub- No losses, and that will hopefully not change.

I was actually surprised how healthy and energetic they are. I put in something to roost on, and already they are practicing, and when they tire of practicing, they jump at the others, which causes the others to run away peeping. It's so cute. I love how wobbly there are, I didn't expect that either. My kids are really excited for their new "pets", I have a 4 and 2 year olds. Not letting them hold them yet, but I've held them a little, and let them gently pet them.

Thank goodness I've been reading these threads on BYC though. It gave me so much more confidence hearing other people share their experience!
