Hello from Oregon! I've wanted chickens for years and finally took the plunge - got a older, somewhat rickety coop from my son's preschool teacher that I'm going to be fixing up and building a run, and just got our first chicks today! My two boys (4 and almost 6) are just as excited as I am!

Only starting with 3 chicks - 2 buff orphingtons and 1 black australorp. I have a sneaking suspicion I'll be getting quite a few more next spring (or maybe sooner if I end up with a roo!)

Congratulations - you got two really good breeds. Welcome to Backyard chickens. The Learning Center is a great place to start a chicken education

Those are some very good and gentle breeds. I'm sure that you and you boys will love them and soon wish for more!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens. You have two great breeds where children are concerned. My children and granddaughter made lap pets of both our Buff Orpingtons and Black Australorps. In addition, they are good layers of large, brown eggs (Australorps are especially excellent layers). Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your BOs and your BA.

Thanks everyone! We all made it through the first night, I was a nervous wreck checking on them every hour until midnight! Mostly because I'm terrified of starting a fire with the heat lamp, we're brooding in our living room at the moment because the boys want to spend lots of time with the chicks. After doing research on other options, I'm gonna try the mama heating pad cave tonight.

I did some research before getting the chicks, picking breeds based on temperament and egg production and these two seemed to be the best of both worlds. The boys seem to be able to tell the two buffs apart, the only way I can tell is one has slightly smaller wings.

I'm already planning a bigger coop for next year and will probably expand my flock by then, but for right now the coop I have is only big enough for 2-4 chickens, it'll probably be a bit of a squeeze as it is for 3 full size girls. Once I get a nice big run built for them I'll start planning how/where to build a bigger coop!
