Honestly, I don't think you should take the fake eggs out at all, except to clean them. It's always reinforcement that the nest box is where they should lay. mine like to roll them around a little. I have 2 yellow ones and a blue easter egg. I have a yellow and blue in one box and the other yellow in another. The white EE will only lay in the box with the blue plastic egg. If I swap it to another box, she will use that one! Silly!
I went to collect the other day because my girls sing before they lay, and I opened the door to a white chicken staring at me. She proceeded to give me a dirty look, get up, turn around in the nest box and lay an egg for me right there. If I had been quicker I could've caught it coming out. LOL!
