i have been working as a sustainable & natural food chef for most of my 15 year career. i have finally found a place with enough room to add 4 laying hens & 2 ancona ducks - for eggs - to my property. VERY exciting.
i have 2 young boys & think it is important, especially today, for kids to have a connection to their food. we take so much for granted today & many people have lost the pride in DOING. i, love DOING, and look forward to all my years of research & working with OTHER people's animals & farms & applying it to my little plot. but, my word, it is scary. all things worth doing are a bit frightening, i know, and so i begin, awfully glad there are so many of you here to relate your wisdom.

You are definitely in one of the right places. I would urge you to go to sufficientself.com. There are a lot of helpful people over there who can help with other self-sufficient activities you may decide to get into. Also, backyardherds.com and theeasygarden.com if you are interested in expanding a little. None of these forums are as busy as BYC, but they are all very helpful, and the people are just as great!

By the way, welcome to your new addiction....

Remember, you don't have to do it all at once. Just pick a spot you want to start using, and gradually unfold your plan as your time, energy and finances allow. Could take years to really take shape and fine tune it over time.
