I've got my 4th batch in lockdown finally. Unfortunately its a staggered hatch - but sometimes you have to do what you have to do. I've got 28 or so due to hatch on Friday or Saturday.

In the past 3 batches I had humidity and airflow issues. The air turned over too often and dried out the eggs - most made it to the end & died of thirst.

This time - I've restricted the air flow significantly during incubation. Not totally - but way more than before.

Plus - in all three previous batches the first pips came on day 19 - which means my thermometer was reading a degree or so cooler than the actual temp in the bator. So - I turned it down 1 degree for this hatch - so I'm not expecting any pips today - but maybe tomorrow or Saturday!

Wish me luck - Darn predators keep getting my birds - I need to replace them with some.

Half way through day 20 since I set them in the incubator at 3pm when I started.

I woke up this morning to 3 pips! Perfect timing. I believe I have the temp just right. The previous 3 batches they pipped on day 19.

I have 21 buff orp eggs that went into lock down & 6 EE's. So far its the buffs that have pipped!

I can't wait to get home from work this afternoon & see what is happening!

Here's wishing you a great hatch and that the day flies by for you so you can go home to your new babies!

Exciting!!!

Good luck! How are you handling your staggered hatch? I've got 12 due to hatch two weeks before a second set of 12, and I'm debating if I should buy another incubator (the one they are in is borrowed) so I can separate the ones in lockdown.

I've got all the eggs in cartons (bottoms cut out). The later eggs are in a foam carton & all the rest are in paper - so I can tell them apart.

I just have them all in there together - I'm not turning them now because I have pips - I turned them before then.

They are due to go into lockdown next Tuesday - so they may be a little wet - I'm not sure how they will turn out. Guess we will see!

I can tell all mine apart, and they are all just laying in an open-style incubator. So you are just not turning the ones that are newer if one has piped?

Tell us how it goes!
