I finally have my first ever chickens - currently 6 though soon going down to 5 bantams.

I bought 2 White Polish Crested hens and a Pekin cockerel and a Pekin hen - the Pekins are both pretty young (hen is POL, cockerel is a bit younger) and was given 2 Light Suffolk cockerels.

I will only be keeping one of the Light Sussex boys - the one who is best with the others - the other boy will be traded or in the pot whichever works out.

Exploring their new home

I brought them home at dusk so they went straight to bed. Everyone seems well settled in... now trying to get clear pics in the fog lol

already addicted lol, already building another coop and waiting delivery on a third

soon as one or other is available I have 4 large fowl moving in - a leghorn rooster and 3 hybrid girls.

Lunch the Light Suffolk cockerel is going to dispatch in a few days (when my brother is here to do the deed) as he is picking fights and bullying the girls out of food. Also at 3 hens and 3 cockerels my balance is *totally* out even if Darcy is gender confused (he doesn't crow, display or posture... all he does is follow Lizzie around and feed her - he doesn't even mind when Napoleon mounts him)

When Lunch is gone I will have room for two more Bantam girls to make it 5 girls, 1 boy and one Lily Savage/Eddie Izzard mix of the chicken world :p

some more pics

They already know I mean food

Cotton posing with her fabulous 'do'

Lizzie showed that she knows to nibble the grass delicately

Napoleon and Lunch having a bit of a tiff (Lunch backed down without actual fighting)

oh and on their first day with me - an egg!

just an update - 12 days since getting the flock now

Cotton and Dandylion remain the friendliest but Darcy and Lizzie are fast warming up to people and Napoleon and Lunch make good Digging Supervisors

they get on great with my niece and nephew

and we've had some fun free ranging in the allotment

An example of the eggs

Lizzie laid her first ever egg yesterday and we're getting an egg most days out of either Dandylion or Cotton

I'm pretty pleased with them egg wise - so far a total of 12 eggs

that being said it takes 5 banty eggs to make a serving of scrambled eggs between me and mum so not many meals out of them yet... now saving them up to make a cake :p

randomly - do you think there would be a market for egg cups that would hold both bantam and regular eggs? (depending which way up you place it) - maybe even up to duck egg

I tell people banty eggs are 'diet eggs'. Well, I assume since they are smaller they have less calories. So, that would be one way to market banty eggs!
