Hi All!
I'm Chelle from Oklahoma, and here's my intro.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
New-ish. I've had a few hens in the past couple years (the most until now was 5), and am just now up to my highest number, which is 9. Hoping they are all hens, as I don't think my neighbor would appreciate a rooster.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I have 2 4 month old barred rocks, and 7 assorted 1 month old chicks. It's disgustingly cute at my place right now.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Barred rocks (2nd favorite breed), Buff Orpingtons (favorite!), salmon faverolles, easter eggers, and a rhode island red (all new breeds for me).
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Of course I love having fresh eggs (store bought eggs are so gross to me now), and the pest control is a plus. Mostly though, I just like chickens and like having them around. I think they're beautiful and funny and make excellent pets (zero judgement towards those that raise them for meat, of course. I'm just a bleeding heart.)
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I love gardening, and spending time with my dogs and goats. I never met a book club I didn't like. I'm finishing my masters in December. Trying to get back into running but the Oklahoma heat is not my friend.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have 3 dogs, a pyrenees mix, and anatolian mix, and a brussels griffon (don't ask.) I have 2 wether goats (again, just pets/weedeaters). I live with my husband and adult kiddo, who are both very tolerant of all of my pets. I do payroll tax accounting for an insurance company. It's not as dull as it sounds.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found BYC a few years ago while googling info about my first 2 chickens. Been lurking ever since. Finally decided to stop being creepy and introduce myself.
