Been reading BYC for a few years since we got our first laying hens in our subdivision back yard, but we just hatched our first clutch under a foster hen meaning I have a lot of new things to learn!
We live in a suburb of Austin, Texas (member of the austexpoultry Yahoo group), homeschooling six kids aged 14 to 6 months. We just bought some acreage, remodeling the house, and have 1 cuckoo marans (goes broody easily and is our "mama",) 1 speckled Sussex, 1 red star, and 1 Ameracauna missing since Friday morning
We also have a new black copper French marans rooster. There are 7 10-day chicks under mama, 4 mixed breeds from our hens and a red star rooster we had only briefly, and 3 feed store white leghorns I tossed in after dark on hatching day. We have learned a lot, had a few losses, but really enjoying the process.
Looking forward to asking and answering some questions!
