Every time I Google anything about chickens, it brings me here, so I might as well just start here.
Most of my childhood we had chickens. Usually spring started with 200 meat chicken and we had an ongoing flock of layers. My wife and kids on the other hand, this is all new to.
We started out incubating our own and the plan has always been to cull the cockerel and keep the rest. I guess my kids forgot about that cull part cause next week I am butchering 3 chickens with names that come when you call them.
I keep my adults in a 36x24 pen, my "teenagers" are in an 8' wide run, that goes along 2 sides of the pen (kind of hoping that helps when I merge them) and I have a brooder in the garage. Way too many hawks, eagles, owls, skunks, fox......and free range neighbor dogs to feel safe free ranging. They do get to take field trips into our fenced yard, about weekly though.
I currently have a barnyard mix of 21 chickens (pre culling) and 10 coochins after yesterday's owl incident. Even in a net covered pen, the poor things aren't completelt safe.
When I am not sitting on Pinterest looking for more stuff I need for my chickens, I can be found fishing, 4 wheeling and coaching youth sports. Next Pinterest project, winterizing the coop.

Woo Hoo! Welcome to BYC!!! Glad you joined up and joined in the fun!

This really is the best place to learn anything and everything about chickens, isn't it? It's great that you joined so you can share what you've learned because all of us are learning all the time.

Sorry to hear about the "owl incident." My biggest threat here in northern Iowa has been mink. I have managed to thwart a great horned owl, a rat, packs of coyotes and an opossum who really, really liked cat food. But the mink remains my nemesis. Good luck on keeping your flock safe, and welcome to the group.
