FINALLY! SWOLLEN EYE SINUS LUMP SWELLING CURE TREATMENT

Hello, I have a chicken who has an eye problem. The eye has been closed most of the time for about a week now. I have been putting Terramycin opthalmic ointment into the eye as many times a day as I think about it. This has helped somewhat, but she still has a problem. She has been/is currently on Tylan powder in the water, and previous to that was on doxycycline (all chickens have had a respiratory problem over the last week or so).

I have tried to buy the ciprofloxacin eye drops talked about on this thread, but it seems they are impossible to buy here in Thailand. Are there any other recommendations please? I'm not sure what to try next!

Note: All chickens, including the one with the problem eye, have never stopped laying, eating and drinking and are all perfectly active chickens.

is it swollen shut or does is have crusty stuff making it stay shut?

Hi Casportpony and KikisGirls,

The eye is swollen shut. It does not have any crust nor anything oozing out. It is now a grayish color and appears to have sunken some.

Here are photos of her bad eye. I attribute this to my bad management

. I have neglected to keep their coop as clean as it should be and I believe this is due to ammonia overload.

The good eye:

She seems perfectly happy in herself....eating, drinking, I think she's still laying, as active as normal. Today, out of desperation, I treated her for eye worms just in case this was the problem. Dosed her orally with Valbazen also.

All help GREATLY appreciated. Many thanks.

@thailand look inside her beak too, at her choanal slit, it is directly connected to the sinuses and therefore eyes, and could have something stuck in it

Hi again,

Ok, checked her choanal slit and everything seems perfect. There is no apparent blockage. It looks exactly as in the picture you posted. After treating for eye worms yesterday she does seem a little better. She is opening her eye a bit more than previously. I have again put Terramycin eye ointment into her eye this morning. Will see how things go over the rest of today.

Thanks Dwayne,

She is keeping her eye open more and more today. I think she's finally turned a corner. I'll keep up with the Cipro drops for a day or so though until I'm definitely sure she's cured. Thanks so much to the OP for starting this thread, and to others who have posted such wonderful words of wisdom. I just keep on learning

Just a quick update on my hen. She appears to have made a full recovery. Thanks everyone for your help. As far as I can tell she has regained full vision in her eye. :)

I now have a rooster not well (suspected gout or rickets). Can someone help me out please with the correct dosage of Metacam (Meloxicam) 7.5mg tablet dosage? Thanks.

It will be almost impossible to dose with that size pill unless you can make a suspension out of it. Can you get suspension liquid?
