Finally! We're getting chickens!

Well, I should say we're getting chickens..again. The last time we had chickens (12 years ago) we lived on a little farm. Now we live in the suburbs and we've been bothering the heck out of my husband to get some again.

I'm a garden and animal writer for quite a few online places and have a book proposal out there for suburban farming - complete with a chapter on chickens in suburbia.

I need my own chickens. My youngest daughter has finally convinced my husband that it makes good sense as they go perfectly with out vegetables, rabbits and 4H club.

We'll only be getting two hens for now, but we're more than thrilled! Maybe australorpe, or arucaunas, americanas, mille fleurs..I don't know...I'm just excited!

We'd like good laying hens (regular sized) but we'd like pretty ones since we'll only have two. I hope we can find laying hens that would be good for showing in 4H, as well.

from SE MO. I started with just 2, but they'r not the same breed. Enjoy the adventure!
 
It's so hard to decide which breeds! When I got my first batch I just kind of pointed and said, "well, ok... that one". Now that I've had suburban chickens for a year, my flock has grown from the initial 3 to... get ready for this... TEN.

My girls are:
ADULTS:
1. banty cochin (bit stand-offish, prone to mites)
2. black sex-link (friendliest bird, head chicken)
3. rhode island red (a bit skittish, definitely descended from dinosaurs)

TWEENS (7 weeks old)
4. australorp (sweetest chicken ever)
5. buff orpington (very friendly!)

CHICKS (5 days old)
6. australorp
7. barred plymouth rock
8-9. white-crested blue polish x2 (I think 1 is a splash)
10. blue cochin (only chick I've ever had/seen that runs to my hand when I reach into the brooder... super friendly & sweet!!)

Jennspeeps, Thanks for the rundown on your ladies. I found myself nodding at your descriptions as I have jad some of these breeds ion the past.

I was wondering about the cochins...we did have one, but it was so long ago. They remind me of warm and busty great-aunts or grandmas with petticoats! A friend recently told me that they aren't the greatest layers - do you think that's true (I know yours is still a chick).

because we're only getting 2, I probably should go for the ones that'll lay quite well. That said, I LOVE the araucauna because of the Easter eggs and the brown and rosy eggs as well.
