I FINALLY got my bearded silkie [bantam] chicks!
I have been waiting and looking forever for them and out of all the places, our local Tractor Supply actually got shipment in! Of course, a friend of mine and I just HAD to go in together and get a few!
(NOTE: I would have preferred to get wood-chips for bedding, but unfortunately every store was either out or only had Cedar shavings... the straw is working out fine for now)
Here are my new babies:
^^^ "orange" chick
^^^ "red" chick
^^^ "white" [blurry] chick
^^^ "blue" chick
They're straight run, so I'm not sure what the genders are. They are even way too young to be able to tell by the wind tip feathers (which I can't tell anyways), but yes, I'm very excited nonetheless! I absolutely love them!
I'm a big pet namer, so these little ones are going to be: Yeti, Pom-pom, Puffy, and Marshmellow-peep (I had "help" naming them from my friend's children, lol) - hey, the names compliment the silkie's fluffiness, right?
Anyone have experience with this breed? Any idea on what colors they'll grow up to be and if their color determines gender? In my past experience, if one chick was a darker shade than the other of the same breed, the darker one always turned out to be male... I know that these chicks are different colors in general, but just wondering if the "red" and "orange" are the same, just different gender, or if one is going to be solid and the other a splash - ???
I also got another Polish/Crested Dutch chicken from a friend to keep my B&W Crested hen company. My hen wasn't doing so well on her own in a flock of "normal-looking" chickens, so now I have a small "Polish United Front" - lol! They stick together and protect each other so things are going really well. Anyways, it's suppose to be a hen, but I really don't know. I haven't heard it crow and it acts "hen-ish" but the head feathers seem more pointy, granted they were kind of peck at (by other chickens from where she came from) and are growing back kind of awkwardly...so I guess we'll see. Anyways, assuming she's a girl, her name is Wynonna:
We decided to separate the "normal" hens from the "weird/exotic" ones. Once my silkies grow, they'll move in with the Polish.
