The man at the feed store told me that a good treat for small chicks (3-4 weeks old) is finch bird food. Anyone ever feed them that? Will it hurt them? Also, he said that chick grit is not needed for the first 4-5 weeks, if I gave my 3 week olds some grit would it hurt them?
:)

The ingredients for the finch food is sunflower hearts, canary grass seed and nyjer seed.

I want mine to grow as big and quickly as possible so mine get nothing but the proper 24% starter for the first month. They don't need added grit if fed store bought feed, only if fed coarse grains, seeds etc that you mentioned.

Grits is not necessary if you're feeding them ONLY chick feed. Pretty much anything else will require grit. If you would have to chew it, so will they. Grit is a chickens version of teeth. Make sure the grit you purchase doesn't contain calcium (like what is used for finches, parrots, ECT). I just give them dirt from my yard.
