Being that I live in the land of fir trees, it's not surprising that the local feed store has big bales of fir shavings, but not pine. They also have "soft wood" (no cedar). What do you think? Okay to use?

I live in the land of fir, too. My house has Douglas fir cabinets, flooring, fencing, wall studs, roofing, staircase, chairs... ok, I'll stop.

I think fir would be fine. It is very different from cedar and doesn't have nearly the aromatic oils that cedar does. Although the coop will smell like Christmas (ahhhhhhhh)

OH-- that's a nice bonus I didn't even think of!

On a completely different topic... I just got a pickup load of cedar shavings from a local mill. I planned to use them for the chickens. Yesterday someone suggested that cedar was not a good type of bedding to use. I used cedar for my pet rats growing up and never had any problems. Should I not use them?

I also found a contact for someone who mills Douglas Fir. Would that be better?

(it's all free)

This is far too late, but what I've read is that it's the oils in the heartwood that are a problem, so outer shavings should be fine?
