Fireants! ... or is it Fire Ants?? Either way...

DE is very temporary. Does NOT kill the mound, only the ones that walk over it. I've tried it and while it did kill for a couple days the First Strike took care of my problem........... its still working and I put it down in May.

Yes, please elaborate on First Strike. I have fire ants mounds in my front yard that just move around from place to place when we put down the white powder stuff my DH gets to treat them with. Whatever he uses works, it just doesn't last.

Yikes!!! I was told that the stuff for swimming pools contain chemicals that are harmful to chickens.

That only the pure DE was to be used. I was cautioned by many here on BYC. The ants are a problem if they are fire ants. I hate them and hoped when I moved to the mtns. I would not have to fight them but they have moved closer to me as time goes by. I hate those things. They ruin potatoes in the garden and make it hard to work outside. My hens do not go out of their large run so I would use anything to get rid of the ants.

I buy First Strike at WalMart, Lowes, Home Depot.............anywhere they sell bug control products. I don't know if its sold everywhere as its firstly a FIRE ANT bait/killer. So, if you live in an area that doesn't have FIRE ANTS you probably won't find it.
