My little chick who is not quite 2 weeks old yet got pecked in the butt by one of her friends and her feathers/fluff got pulled out. She has a rip in her skin now. A little blood appeared but she doesn't seem to be in pain. She's still eating drinking etc... I cleaned it and put noesporin on it. What else should I do? I feel like as she walks around its opening more. Should I try closing it? And if so, how? This is my first time raising chicks and I'm at a loss. I'm attaching a picture of the wound. Any suggestions would help. Thanks!

She might do okay if you get lucky - at any rate, you've done the right stuff.

It seems like their skin can just keep tearing once it's flayed open like that sometimes, though, so it's iffy. I don't know if there's some way you can keep her in a smaller space so she doesn't move around? That's hard to do since she has to have heat, water and food at all times, too, so I understand if you don't have a way to do that. I would probably add some Nutri Drench to the water if you have it, just for good measure. I hope she pulls through! :)

I don't know about liquid bandage...my first thought would be I'd hesitate to use something like that because of the chemicals in it. But, I googled and found where some say it's okay to use, but then others said you're sealing in bacteria that would otherwise drain, and that is a very good point.

I wonder whether using a little at each end, to keep it from tearing further, but leave the center of the wound open would work, but that's just me using my wild imagination and there is no medical basis for that theory at all. LOL

Okay next issue - this little girl has a runny eye. She has been this way since I got her. Everyone else is fine and growing and maturing. They are getting their "big girl" feathers and perching and jumping and doing l things chicken. She is not really growing or feathering. She eats and drinks just fine and shows no real signs of distress. The draining is clear and really just looks like its frothing. I am totally confused. I originally thought she was pecked in the eye during transport but now I have no idea. She's starting to get picked on now since she is so much smaller than the rest. I tried to separate her from the others but she literally screamed for an entire 12 hrs until i put her back with the others. She was more stressed being alone. What would you suggest?

I've seen that foamy eye thing somewhere before...let me see what I can find. Maybe just put one other chick in with her to keep her company so she'll be calm?

Added - just found this:

[FONT=arial, helvetica]Chicken and Turkey Coryza Causative Agents: Haemophilus paragallinarum and Bordetella avium

Although the names of these diseases are similar, the organism that causes the disease in chickens (Haemophilus paragallinarum) is different from the organism that affects turkeys (Bordetella avium).

Method of Spread

These are common organisms in poultry flocks. The diseases are passed from age group to age group as replacement stock is introduced to the farm. A percentage of birds become asymptomatic carriers.

Signs

Both these bacterial infections produce foamy, watery eyes, discharge from the nostrils, and sometimes swollen sinuses. Unlike fowl cholera, deaths rarely occur. Affected chicks and poults do not grow well, and the flock appears uneven in size.

Treatment and Prevention

Appropriately administered antibiotics may be effective in alleviating signs of disease, but do not affect carrier status. Vaccines are available.
