A scalpel is a sharp medical blade. Good ones should be sterile and individually wrapped.

I don't think I'll need that as my kit is for injuries that are not emergencies, I am willing to take my babies to the vet if it's a bad injury

I don't use it for serious injuries or cutting into my birds. I use it for small things like gently removing a scab since it is a sterile tool that won't introduce bacteria. Or when I hatch and there is a string of goo or the dried umbilical cord that has stayed attached for more than 12 hours after hatch with a chick dragging around it's shell.
