Just wanted to share my first experience with hatching button quail…
My Mother in law ordered 12 button eggs from eBay… I’m unsure of the seller but they are located in MI, same state as us.
I was tasked with incubating them!
I was beyond nervous. This would be my second time ever incubating anything (first was ducks) and in my reading found that button quail can be difficult to hatch, especially so with shipped eggs.
We received 14 eggs in total. I allowed them to rest for about 24 hours. Candled to find one cracked egg. set 13 eggs on Saturday September 4th.
Day 4 we seen veins!
Day 5 we had a loss.
Day 10 we had two suspected infertile and another loss. This left 9 eggs in the incubator.
Day 15 we candled before lockdown… 9 beautiful, full eggs! Two saddle air cells. We even found a few internal pips.
Day 16 we had external pips! Three babies hatched yesterday… on my daughters birthday! Boy was she ever excited!
Day 17 the remaining six eggs hatched!! Nine beautiful baby quail.
We did have an unfortunate accident and lost one baby. The last hatchling was born with pretty curled feet- the only one of the bunch! It was heartbreaking watching him/her flail around in the incubator. We taped within an hour or two after hatch and left him in the incubator. I’m thrilled to see that this little one is finally finding its feet and is actually able to stand and take a few steps now! We plan to remove the tape in the morning and see how he is doing. I’m hoping with taping them so quickly that it won’t take long to right.
I’m quite thrilled with our success on this hatch. My kids were in awe of the tiny eggs and that awe increased tenfold when they seen the chicks… absolute wonder in their eyes.
Of course, a few photos of the cuteness!!
I did try to “nest” Laces so that s/he had less room at the start of taping to adjust to standing but the little bugger kept escaping. The one photo just cracks me up as it looks like he’s kicked back on the couch watching a movie.
