First Button Quail Hatch…

Just wanted to share my first experience with hatching button quail…

My Mother in law ordered 12 button eggs from eBay… I’m unsure of the seller but they are located in MI, same state as us.

I was tasked with incubating them! 🎉 I was beyond nervous. This would be my second time ever incubating anything (first was ducks) and in my reading found that button quail can be difficult to hatch, especially so with shipped eggs.

We received 14 eggs in total. I allowed them to rest for about 24 hours. Candled to find one cracked egg. set 13 eggs on Saturday September 4th.

Day 4 we seen veins! 😮

Day 5 we had a loss. ☹️

Day 10 we had two suspected infertile and another loss. This left 9 eggs in the incubator.

Day 15 we candled before lockdown… 9 beautiful, full eggs! Two saddle air cells. We even found a few internal pips. 😱

Day 16 we had external pips! Three babies hatched yesterday… on my daughters birthday! Boy was she ever excited!

Day 17 the remaining six eggs hatched!! Nine beautiful baby quail.

We did have an unfortunate accident and lost one baby. The last hatchling was born with pretty curled feet- the only one of the bunch! It was heartbreaking watching him/her flail around in the incubator. We taped within an hour or two after hatch and left him in the incubator. I’m thrilled to see that this little one is finally finding its feet and is actually able to stand and take a few steps now! We plan to remove the tape in the morning and see how he is doing. I’m hoping with taping them so quickly that it won’t take long to right. 🤞🏻

I’m quite thrilled with our success on this hatch. My kids were in awe of the tiny eggs and that awe increased tenfold when they seen the chicks… absolute wonder in their eyes.

Of course, a few photos of the cuteness!! 😍

I did try to “nest” Laces so that s/he had less room at the start of taping to adjust to standing but the little bugger kept escaping. The one photo just cracks me up as it looks like he’s kicked back on the couch watching a movie. 🤣

Thank you!!

Little Laces had the tape removed this morning and showed off perfectly straight little toes! Took about 20 minutes to get steady on his feet and learn to walk… again. I just love the coloration (I have no idea about different morphs as these are my MIL’s birds)… he reminds me of an angry bird! 🤣😍🤣

Thank you Ravenlover. I’ve been pretty impressed with this little incubator! I’ve found the temp and humidity to be spot on with separate calibrated thermometers and hygrometers. My first time using it was for ducklings and boy oh boy I learned real quick it’s a bit too small for them! 🤣 I will definitely be purchasing a larger incubator if we decide to incubate ducks again. Lol!

My mother in law gave (with our permission) my daughter two of the babies so I am trying to brush up on my button knowledge. I’m wondering if anybody would like to help me with a few questions?

They are two weeks old today.

1- when is a safe time to add foliage, hides, enrichment, etc.? I’ve read not to add things to soon so they don’t get stuck or lost from the heat but not when to add it.

2- Can the sand bath be left in full time? Will they over eat it? Do we need to offer a separate grit or will the sand be enough? When should we begin offering additional calcium? Do we need to add calcium if we have two males (I’m assuming no but I want to be sure)?

3- is there a difference in a normal color with a dark belly vs a normal color with a yellow belly?

4-Morph guesses? 😅
I will post photos in separate comments of the three I’m curious about.

I can’t find much on the differences in pied- can each morph be pied? So would Bandit (Laces!) be a specific pied morph? For example- silver pied or normal pied?! I also cannot find much the differences of the silvers. I seen pearl often has stripes and a brighter forehead. But red breasted and normal silver there doesn’t seem to be much info.

#1- I think might be a red breasted?

*My mother in laws bird I’m just super curious if my guess was correct. Lol!

#2- Silver something? I can’t help but feel like this baby is not just silver because of the whiteish spots on the feathers… but I have no idea really. Lol!!
