I now have my first chick that I helped out last night around 10pm. However, it only has one eye open. It already knows to go to drink water, but so far has not tried to eat even I repeatedly tapped on the floor with scattered food. Any suggestion how should I get him to eat? Would he eventually open both eyes? (well I'll take it if he stays that way but can eat and be healthy otherwise).

Here are a couple of photos we took this morning, one photo showing the shell with some yolk still left:

Here is what I did, if this helps to understand the situation I am in:
Last night I finally decided to step in after seeing no progress for over 12 hours, and no other activity for any other egg. I know this batch of eggs were not good to start with since the day we received them, they were left in the heat of a mail carrier on a very hot day for several hours. So I did not have a good feeling it is going to a good hatch.

I first poked a long qtip through the air hole on the bator to helped the egg zipped half a circle, and then also used the qtip to applied some water to the membrane exposed. However, the chick still seems stuck. The membrane looked completely white, and according to the post in the hatching forum, that means it is dehydrated already. So I took the egg out and completely removed the shell and the membrane. There is still some egg yolk left in the shell, but the chick appears to be fully developed. I then put it back to the bator.

The chick first struggled lying on its side trying to stand up, but when I get up 4am in the morning, it was already standing on its legs. So I moved him into a home made brooder. So far all he does is either snuggle on the fluffy toy and take some nap, walk around, or go to drink some water. No eating yet.

Any suggestion on how should I get him to eat is appreciated.

I still see blood in the eggie (veins) so your chick is just weak is all

Some dont make it when you assit them and theres still blood needing to be absorbed and others just need to rest a bit...since it's drinking that's wonderful! As for the eye closed... if you look the down on that side is also matted...it's just dried shut with egg junk

When it's more spunky you can take q-tips with warm water on it and pet it in that area until some of the stuff comes off the face (the q-tip should look a little yellowish).

Thank you Niki for the tips!

I will try the q-tip to help him clean up the closed eye a little bit later. Good news is I just managed to get him to peck on food when I stuck his little head in a dish of fine grounded feed. I think because his one eye closed, he did not have good feeling or sight of food on the floor. When his beak is stuck into a pile of feed, he start to peck on them. Not sure how much he actually ate though lol since his beak is so small.

My original intention was to raise them just for eggs, not as pets; but now I get my very first hatch and when I see this little thing peeping and moving around awkwardly, everything I have been doing so far is towards the opposite! I even skipped the daily breakfast with my wife and son!
