We've had ducks for a few years now and I finally talked my husband into chickens. It's the first time I've had chicks since I was really little. We got two RIR's from a straight run, and they're both so sweet, I'm hoping they are both hens. At what age (and please dont say when they start crowing hahaha!) could we tell if we have guys or dolls? I'm not too worried about it, just curious if Pearl is really an Earl! Or if Rose is really... well, that one might just stay a Rose lol

Red wattles on Pearl look mighty suspicious.
How old are they?
As mentioned above, 4-6 weeks should tell the tale on males with redder combs and wattles.

That was my exact thought yesterday and tempted me to post. We got them on March 3rd, so they're roughly 4ish weeks. I'll keep an eye on Pearl/Earl!

Neither really looks like a RIR to me. They're buff and barred....is Calico Princess a possibility? What color are those little legs?

Too cute! :love

It wouldn't surprise me! We got them from TSC. My husband always makes fun of me during Chick Days, yet he's the one who takes me and then gives me the puppy eyes when he see's the babies :lau we went the Saturday after they got them in, so almost all of the chicks and ducklings were gone, but we managed these two and two pekins that day. Three days later HE went alone (to get feed) and came home with two blue Asain pullets and two khaki campbells. Anywho! Their legs are a light yellow.. I'll get a picture for you!

RIRs are usually a lot redder than that. So I don't think so, maybe a cross though. I am not good with breeds so take my word for it. I think it might be earl. It's wattles are so much bigger and redder than rose. I think miss rose is a miss, but again I am not the chicken expert good luck with both! they are beautiful/handsome!
