first covey of quail!!

I've been processing my first covey/hatch of quail. We are going on vacation and, though its a bit early, I'm beginning to send my stock to freezer camp. We ate our first the other nite and I have several people that want quail. I'm excited about being able to do this. Its not always easy to harden one's heart to do the culling. I've set aside a dozen females and a few males. Not quite done on that, but need a bit more room. Its certainly been a learning curve with the quail. This group has been so wonderfully docile. They are used to me and will even talk to me as I'm feeding. I feel a bit guilty because they seem to trust me. But, they live a good life. They get consistent food, treats, dust baths daily, and whatever else I can do to make their short lives complete.

I do enjoy the quail. A bit sorry to dispatch the covey.

Kudos to you, I just can't bring myself to do it! If I have any extras I just sell them. Now if I ever do eat it, I might change my mind, but right now I just can't

I just did about 8 of my culls tonight. It wasn't easy to do, but it had to be done.

I culled a half dozen yesterday, myself. Now I'm on that can't-find-meat-appetizing streak, fun fun.
Having only the layers left feels so weird, especially since I finally got around to changing their food dishes so they waste less.

I really don't mind doing quail. It is all part of it but I do flinch every time I do the first one.

I culled around 20 and we enjoyed them by cooking on the grill in foil wraped in peppered bacon.... and as we ate them we talked about how important and great the birds are

As long as they go to good use I am happy to cull them. My dog gets what we don't eat

(thighs, internals etc)

ive never had enough to cull. but this time im getting 50 eggs and ill choose the best 12 (my mom only wants me to keep 10 but 2 more wont be noticed) and ill sell/ eat the remainders. fire up the grill!!!

Good for you! I have only just begun my Coturnix quail adventure and my first cull is coming up. I haven't done it yet so hopefully I find a good way to do it. I hunt in the fall but I'm worried my hand feed birds will be a bit different than an elk.
