I heard it this morning. Didn't recognize the sound and commemted to hubby about that strange sound when he realized that was the first two crows of one or both of my roosters. Been waiting for it since they were a week old in march.
Those first crows can sound kind of awkward, but they will get the hang of crowing pretty quickly. I was so proud of my roosters when they started crowing.
Yes it is nice to have people wanting the rooster and the crow. When we first moved out here 45 years ago, we heard a rooster crowing every morning - we loved it. Never could figure out where it came from. We were city people and thought it was great to hear crowing.
Grew up in a small town but never really got to know farm life (even my uncle's farm...we only visited once or twice a year). Just moved in a farming community about a year ago and now have an opportunity to watch and talk to farmers. This being my first flock, I'm excited and curious about it and a lot of the complaints I hear about chickens being too annoying and a lot of work don't seem to apply to me (yet...though I hope rarely or not at all). The noise level is one thing but they don't make any noises. My roosters don't fight that I can tell (will be a sad day when they start because I want to keep both) and the hens are either doing an excellent job standing their ground against both roosters or the roosters aren't trying to breed yet (another sad day when a hen or more gets hurt because I'll miss the roo I give away).
Jimmy ,8m/o EE starts about 5am and sounds off for 30 minutes or so .Then he does so again periodically thruout the day as he makes his rounds. If he chases off the wild birds, he crows. If he gets treats, he crows. Doesn't take much to get him going.
Then in the evening as he is making his last inspection of the yard for the evening, he slowly makes his way around the yard , stopping every so often to let everyone know that this is HIS yard. Then he goes and parks in his roosting place just outside the pen full of younger birds.
3 cats and a dog as yardmates and everyone gets along fine. We will see how it goes when the girls are allowed out to range a bit.
Oh I almost forgot about Oreo. He is our 5m/o lorp. He just started crowing a couple of weeks ago and is too cute to listen to him go from 1 raspy note to the full throated crow that he is still developing
