First Cull :(

I'm so sorry for your trauma... but you did what you had to do for the good of your flock.

I have a sharp pair of hedge cutters on the wall ... I know should the time arise - my aim would be horrific ... a quick "close" of the trimmers and it's all done - (can even do it with my eyes closed)....

Your girls will and I sure they DO already thank you!

Honestly, we've only culled one rooster for aggression. Figured he'd end up in someone's pot with that attitude and that it might as well be mine. He didn't suffer for a moment. We lashed a rope around his legs and hung him upside down from a tree limb. DH used an exacto knife to puncture the jugular and he bled out, just passed out then passed on. Very little flapping at all. He probably didn't even feel the puncture. I hated to do it but refused to make him someone else's problem.

I'm sorry it went so badly.

I'm hoping he stays nice though - I'm hoping to sell or give him away. This wasn't possible with Red due to his aggression (most people who showed interest had young children) but with Black he might be better suited if he calms down a bit without Red making everyone miserable. He would fight with pullets for cripes sake.

Sadly, giving Red away would have been passing on a problem. It was the kinder way.. but wasn't necessarily the easier way.

I don't think I can do that to black though. He's just too much of a weenie. Like when Red grabbed his wattles he screamed loudly, unlike the roo I'm keeping who just was badgered relentlessly like that until Red backed off from exhaustion.

I'll try finding him a home again, this time without his "brother".

put 2, 4" nails 2 fingers apart on a chopping block, put the chicken's neck in the middle and pull back until the nails/ head stops you from doing so... have a bucket with lid on the bottom of your board, swing your axe, drop the carcass into the bucket straight away and cover. No miss, no mess.

Life is too short to be dealing iwth mean roos. Sorry it went so bad. I'm sure the rest of your flock is happier.

For my first roo cull I made a killing cone by cutting a hole in the bottom of a 1 gallon plastic landscape container. It worked out well.

thats exactly the way my dad used to do it. I can still remember those days. I have yet had to cull- but had 4 packing peanuts with my last order from Murray McMurray - soooo..I think I'll let my brother/dad or Dear husband have that pleasure when the time comes. I'd love to have a roo around, but with a 3 year old who likes to go in the coop- it makes me nervous, knowing how mean they can get.

Sorry to hear about your experience. I agee, that is the worst part of being a chicken flock owner. I hope it goes better for you next time.

So Sorry for your bad experience!!! You can find old traffic cones almost a t any flea market or from a teen ager. LOL I dont ask! Just cut out the tip of the cone to the needed size and use it. It makes it alot easier! and its cheeper than buying one of those expensive steel ones! It doesn't get easier but it gets better! or I should say You get better! LOL

Good Luck and God Bless!
