First duckling hatch of 2025!

You’re doing good! I don’t look for movement, in the last week or so it’s a dark blob usually. Sometimes you can see shadowing before they pop through the membrane. Ducks seem to take FORever and rest a lot compared to turkeys and geese. I also had a duck pip on the wrong end but just monitored her carefully and only helped if necessary, basically after she’d zipped all around and was struggling to get out of the half shell. She was perfectly fine and grew just like the rest, you’d never know.

I’ve also had a couple pip at the wrong end, and they’ve all lived so far.. Last night R2 was wiggling a lot, but this morning their air cell is still unchanged! I don’t know why they would be behind R5 developmentally, unless R5 is actually an egg from my flock instead of a Runner. It’s definitely possible! I’ve heard Runners take a bit longer. R5 is shadowing along the air cell and looks very close to internal pip

R5 has internally pipped and is peeping!! Such a good little duck!

R2 continues to be the problem child. When I candle it, it just doesn’t look fully developed but it’s definitely alive. There is still some space in the egg and the cell has not drawn down. It’s worrying me!

How are they doing today?
What are your temps like? I’m attempting my first hatch of the year, but expect it to flop. I had frozen eggs several days I was collecting… but some days were warmer. I set 23 eggs.

R5 is rolling around and peeping but no external pip yet. R2 finally has the air cell drawn down! Yay! Hopefully he/she is in position to internally pip soon!

Wow, frozen eggs! That is not something I have to worry about here in Hawaii At night it has been in the low 50s, and high 60 to low 70 during the day

Here is Div & his 2 ladies. I think a lot of my ducks are chocolate colored so I only chose these 2 since I’m trying to produce sex linked ducklings. Div is a Khaki Campbell mix - I have no idea what breed he is mixed with. The grey/blue duck is Lovely and the Black duck doesn’t have a name - yet. They are both mixes, probably including some Cayuga & Swedish blue

I had no idea you were in Hawaii! Totally different weather than Wisconsin…. Next week all the lows are below zero.

Tonight when I candled R2, I was excited because I heard clicking, and clicking usually clicking means breathing. But I can’t see it’s bill in the air cell. I do see some slight shadowing so maybe it just has the tip of its bill in the air cell?
