I got an egg from 1 of three hens ( I dont know which one). It was soft, broke and laid on the feed box. None of the hens cackled or was proud looking. I was so excite the next morning but I found nothing and the same thing happened the next morning and for about 3 weeks after. Is it wierd to get oe egg and then nothing for 3 weeks? They are free-range from 7 a.m to 8 p.m so they could be laying outside. How do i solve this? I have chicks in the coop during the day but I finished a second coop yesterday that i can lock them up in to see if they are laying. I have looked everywhere to see if they are laying. Thanks for the answers :)

If it was a first egg, and you haven't found anymore anywhere, she might not have her "cycle" regularly yet. Not sure if it should be three weeks, but I have had enough soft eggs for each of my girls to have laid one, yet only two give eggs on any kind of regular basis. And by that, i mean we've gotten a total of six eggs in the past two weeks.

The weather can also be a huge factor and can play on there laying.

Thanks so much!! Weather has been normal, and these hens are at the top of the pecking order so I know they are not stressed.

Of course they could be laying outside if you let them out at 7am. You didn't mention age or breed. If your question is how to solve "this" You need to figure out what "this" is. Did you look around for eggs? Are they all of age that they should be laying? If so, I suggest locking up the hens for a while till you figure out how many are laying and they figure out how to use a nest box. If all you've seen is one odd egg, I'd wait it out. It takes a while for them to get their routine. Be sure you have a calcium source.

Lock 'em up in the coop for a week or two, put some fake egg/golf balls in the nests.

Free range birds sometimes need to be 'trained'(or re-trained) to lay in the coop nests, especially new layers.
Leaving them locked in the coop for 2-3 days can help 'home' them to lay in the coop nests.
They can be confined to coop 24/7 for a few days to a week, or confine them at least until mid to late afternoon.
You help them create a new habit and they will usually stick with it.
