First egg!!!! But not all of them are laying..

I put my chicks on layer feed early. I bought one 50# bag of chick starter for 16 chicks. Once the 50# bag was gone they went to layer feed. It didn’t make them lay any earlier of course.

Today a second hen started laying! However she laid three soft shell eggs.... I purchased oyster shells but they aren’t actually consuming them, just picking them up and dropping them.... could they just be too big of pieces? They seem sort of large in my opinion I don’t think I’ve seen my girls eat anything hard and solid that size

I’m also slightly concerned because Khaleesi laid two double yolk eggs two days in a row, and this morning Lady laid three soft shell eggs (her first time laying).. am I doing something wrong? This seems unhealthy. I’m almost positive the soft ones came from Lady because she was in the nest all morning and all afternoon and was very loud all day. Could it just be because they are young/laying for the first time?

These issues are fairly common for new layers, especially if you have production breeds.

It takes a while for the conveyor belt to get regulated. Here's a little video comparing the reproductive system in a new layer to a candy factory:

Lady has been working hard to get a hard shelled egg and today she finally did it! I’ve been mixing in the oyster shells and egg shells into their feed! We now have 2 laying chickens!! Just waiting on Raven now! She’s always danced to the beat of her own drum so who knows when that will be.. but I’m sooo excited!

I’m glad to hear that these issues are normal. I did so much research on raising chickens before and while I was raising them but never looked much into the egg laying process because i wasn’t there yet, I’m so happy to have this website! You guys are awesome!
