First egg; but, why there?

We finally have gotten our first egg from our small flock which is GREAT! It is a bit oblongs; but, what bothers me is the fact that it wasn’t in the nest box which is open and has been open for them for 2-3 weeks now. I have golf balls in them- should I switch them out for actual faux eggs?

I put items in the spot where she decided to lay. Thankfully it was inside of the coop; just, not where I would want them to lay.

The faux eggs might help. Mine layed her first eggs where my faux ones are and not the ones with golf balls or the ones with easter eggs

Their first egg usually comes as a surprise to them and location isn't usually ideal. Imagine eating taco bell while you were driving......nevermind.
Anyways she will eventually most likely start laying in the boxes. Give her time. Was it a double yolk?
I've had one walk right in front of me in my lawn chair while they where free ranging and just squat dropped a egg right there and kept walking.
