Ok... so my rose comb leghorns are 17 weeks old this saturday. My dominiques have less-developed combs and wattles and are squatting all over the place. I guess my girls do not follow the rules. I AM SO IMPATIENT!
Does it really matter if I have pine shavings in the nest box and golf balls instead of fake eggs?

Carol, I love the egg colors in your avatar. What breed of chickens do you have and who is laying what color?
Thanks. I have 4 Easter Eggers who lay green and blue-green eggs, an Ancona that lays the white egg, and a New Hampshire Red and Black Jersey Giant that each lays a different shade of brown. In a few weeks, I'm getting some maran and welsummer chicks - so next year I'll have some dark brown eggs to add to the basket - and I'm looking for Ameraucana and Araucana chicks to add some blues to it.
Well, I feel like a dummy. i posted last week that my barred rock started laying and posted a pic. As the week went by i would get one egg or none and thought my regular laying girl had quit. Seems like what happened was she was laying late after I put them up or early in the morning and again in the afternoon leaving me two eggs in the nests (somedays)which led me to believe a new girl was laying. Anyway, I thought even though some of the eggs were a bit out of oval that it was a new girl laying but thought they were awful big for a new laying girl. Hence this afternoon I went to give them some treats and saw 2 new BR girls in the nesting boxes-After much scratching around I got these and then my older girl Hennypenny layed hers a little later. So, now these look like what they should--cute as buttons!!! This is exactly week 20 for them-right on time.the one hen that did all the scratching and took the longest to lay had a little blood on hers.
Opened the coop this morning... nothing... came back this afternoon and.... WE GOT OUR FIRST EGG!!!
Perfect little egg, not really a small pullet egg like what I was expecting, it's close to the size of a regular store bought large egg.
Beautiful light brown egg, with just a few speckles of white on it. Beautiful.
We're at 21 Weeks 1 day. I think it was laid by one of the Black Stars.
We got our first egg today!!!! Wow! How exciting!!! I'm sure it was from our Red Star, Heidi. We've had her 5 weeks now and she is probably around 19 weeks. It's funny......she squatted on 8/11 my husband's birthday and laid her first egg today, 8/20, our anniversary!!
It wasn't in the nest box, but maybe next time. We have a golf ball in the nest box so maybe now that she knows what's coming, she will put it with that.
Darn good size for a first egg!!
Now I can't wait to check for another one tomorrow!!!
