First egg gone bad? [Graphic Pics]

I agree that something must have happened and the girls just went wild on her. All it takes is a little blood and then they're all interested as it's "different" then.

She looks pretty good honestly. That diarrhea or white bothers me.

Is it seperated? Kepp it seperated untill it heals. The rason they pecked in the first place is because if they see something this is wrong with the other chickens they will try to kill it. It's a chicken thing. I had a sick babby, the pthers pecked her almost to death befor we could save her. I also have a GLW with ahurt leg who has ben sepperated because se was begining to be pecked. (check out my thing on her) Hope she gets better soon. Also what does her poop look like?

Well one thing - you mentioned about changing from a certain type of feed. Did you do a feed change recently and, if so, was there something in particular that prompted your change?

Also, what percentage of protein is in their feed (the one you were feeding for say the last week), how much room did the girls have (maybe a little close, or lots of room)?

First thing I always do with a bird that is stressed or ill or any chance of diarrhea is give them some form of probiotics. For her, that could be plain yogurt (all the girls can get some), or acidophilis capsule/tablet contents if you have that, or something like Probios powder from the feed store.

That will replace good bacteria that will be lost during this type of thing.

The second thing would be to monitor and describe her droppings. It's going to be hard to tell, but was there any waxy black or grey around her vent? Any discharge like cottage cheese? Are you certain this is not egg? (No yolk in other words) or is it the urates and urine mixed together.

In the second picture, to me, it looks like white diarrhea dripping down.

I wouldn't treat with an antibiotic at all; most would be imappropriate and might cause more issues. IS she still eating, alert, etc? Peppy?

Of course I'd offer her free choice grower and/or layer and start offering oyster shell. If she doesn't need it she won't eat much of it. If she does, she might - and that's a good thing.

Feed her for overall healing at least: a vitamin/mineral supplement in her water. Although I'd consider using organic applecider vinegar in her water (1 tablespoon to a gallon of water) for a week to see if maybe there was a yeast problem causing some of this. Do you have a rooster that breeds them? Or just hens?

I'm really curious if any of her droppings are normal.

I would also consider trimming the feathers beneath her vent until the white diarrhea stops to see if at least they won't cling there and perhaps become an issue.

By the way, were these purchased through a NPIP tested flock? Or bred from NPIP tested breeders at home?

I switched back about the 1st of July. The reason for switching was I went from TSC feed, to a good Amish Feed Store feed (where I started getting my goat feed too)

I dont recall the percentage of protein. I know its what the guy suggested for the age birds I have. As for room... they have a 6x12 run, and a 6x6 coop (above it) for 9 birds total, 1 Roo, 8 hens. First issue I have had.

Batch of yogurt is in the incubator as we speak!!

I have decided its not egg (although at first I thought I saw what appeared to be little shell bits) as there is no yolk (and thats no joke! har har). I didnt see any waxy black or grey around her vent, although I couldnt get the 'best' look. Didnt see any 'cottage cheese' type discharge. Its just goey white. When we first started to clean her up this morning, she was dripping a little bit of a clearish fluid? The more I think about it, the more it looks like a diarrhea issue.

I agree

She is not quite as 'peppy' as before, as she doesnt run away when I try to grab her. (all of my hens hate me for some reason! but oddly my Roo loves me) But she does put up a little fight, and seems to be in good spirits. She is eating... not sure if its enough. I have her in a small cage (think medium/large dog kennel) right now to isolate her. Tomorrow, I might put her out in the goat pen with the goats. They will leave her alone I presume, and it will give her a chance at freedom she hasnt had for 2 days now. That will give me a chance to see how she is acting

My chickens have always had free choice of their food... but I do need to offer the oyster shell.

I have the vinegar, I just need to give her some... on tomorrow's list!

Yes we have a Roo, although he is the same age as all the hens. We hatched them all out this spring. Pics of the eggs, hatching, growth, etc can be seen on my blog (as well as pics of my coop, and goats, and much more LOL)

I have not seen any as of yet....

Not a bad idea, I will see what we can work up on this tomorrow...

Not sure... but the following quote is from the website of the farm we got the eggs from

Yes. Ask them for the testing certification of birds that have been tested for lymphoid leukosis. I'm doubtful the diarrhea is the cause, but it could be she wasn't feeling well and was hunkering down. Again though, she seems really alert for a bird that is sick.

I think because of the combination of injuries and white diarrhea I would be half tempted to treat her with penicillin injections. Pen will treat some forms of enteritis, and will help if any of the issues are caused by the injuries.

PEn shots are tricky as they require a larger width needle (18 gauge for chickens where usually around 25 is the norm) as the particles in the suspension of penicillin are large. They settle to the bottom, the vial must be refrigerated, and then you have to shake it for what seems like days to get the particles back into suspension. Then you pull the injection amount and let that come to room temp - shake again, then inject IM. That's the basics of it. If you get Penicillin G procaine, get 3 syringes (3 cc) and you'll give a certain amount every other day.

It's something to consider as it's commonly used for peritonitis and enteritis and wounds.

I never realized how viscous chickens can be. I guess I take my sweeties for granted.

So how many chickens did it take to do that?

Ok, she seems to be doing very well today... Its diarrhea for sure... She has had yogurt today, some strawberry tops, and nice free range out with the goats.

I am amazed as to how well she handles the hose down with the garden hose, and then dousing with the peroxide!

I hope the yogurt helps. The wife is going to make more again tonight to have for her tomorrow. I fed a bunch to the rest of the flock too. Its amazing how fast they can devour it!!

TWZLRWHO: (cute avatar btw) Someone on the boards recently had a kid mishandle a chicken. her quote was "not my proudest moment as a mother" (and she was actually very upset).

I'm reminded of that quote here. Sometimes our chickens will do that. "Not the proudest moment..." but it happens. With chickens, it's their nature sometimes - one part of their nature that I dislike. Thankfully there are a whole lot other aspects of their nature that are more agreeable.

MANGUS580:

Well that's good news! From this point you won't have to do the H2O2, just warm water will suffice. And hopefully soon you won't even have to do that.

I'm glad (?) to hear that it's some diarrhea - must less worrisome immediately than having a broken egg in any case.

I'm curious, on home made yogurt, what bacteria are you able to use? And yes - when they love it, they'll attack you for it.

My little cochin frizzles now will NOT let me put my hand in the cage because they're certain that yogurt is smeared all over me. One day I know I'm going to put a hand in with them, and draw out a skeletal hand. They just love the yogurt and now my hand apparently.

Your girl is a good girl. Any changes over than these? How's that wound looking?
