This morning we got our first egg!! It was actually TWO eggs! I'm pretty sure they were laid by the same girl. They were both soft shelled and the same color. And they were on the poop board right by each other as if they were laid while the hen was sleeping. I found the suspected laying hen sitting on the golf ball in the nest when I went out to check this morning so I'm pretty sure I know who it is.

Is it normal for a pullet to lay two first eggs together? And how long until she lays hard shelled eggs?

get some crushed oyster shell for her so she can lay a hard egg. The soft ones, from what I remember, can lead to the hen getting egg bound as she can not pass the egg easy. Congrats that is great wish mine were laying

These are the eggs. Not sure why the image didn't upload earlier. Thanks for the input. Picked up some Oyster shell today!

I have to ask what you are feeding your girls. I usually don't get first eggs from a hen that are soft shelled nd usually feed starter and game bird feed until they start laying.

Some of you talk about signs a hen gives when she is getting ready to lay. Can anyone share them with me or let me know where to go to read on it for myself? Please...thank you

I got 2 more first eggs this morning! I have noticed that as the hens are within days of laying, they turn up and dig around in the nest boxes a lot. And they are much more talkative!

Medicated Starter/grower. I have a flock of mixed ages so I can't give layer pellets.

You really need to switch to non-medicated if some of the chooks are near laying age as it can cause them problems laying and lead to periadontis. Get multiple feeders and hang the one for the layer pellets at the head height of your oldest chooks. A little bit of layer feed won't hurt the younger birds, but your older birds defintly need it . When I have pullets or chicks in my coop I hang 3 feeders at different heights so that each chook can get the feed it needs.

Signs of laying - squatting or being mounted by roo/ lead chook

Combs and wattles filling out, goinging from pink to red in red comb breeds or darkening in purple combs, can't use this for black combs.

Arranging a nesting area

Increased chatting.

Hanging solo in a certain spot ( this is where she wants to lay the first egg)
