I got my first egg today, however it was laying in the middle of the floor. About four feet away are the laying boxes. Is this normal for them to not use the boxes when they start? Will they start using the boxes after they get into the swing of this new adventure they are on? Are there any tips on how to get them to lay in the boxes?

Yes, that can be normal. The sensation of an egg coming is new to them and pullets can pace back and forth to the nest. Sometimes, they don't make it back quick enough. Put golf balls or fake eggs in the nest box and in time, she'll figure out where they should go.
