First Egg Then 4 Days Without Another - What Gives?

Our Production Red layed her first egg four days ago and has yet to give us another. Is this common?

Yes, it is very common. Our first red laid a double yolk for her first, then waited 6 days for the second one. Their systems take some time to get regular. The eggs will also get larger and more even in color.

Finally got egg number 2! It was five days between the first and second egg. Boy oh boy was the other chicken (Mabel) making lots of noise. It was like she was pacing and worriend for Clara. Is that normal?

Sometimes when one of my girls sings the "egg song", the others join in. I think it has to do with how enthusiastically the one actually laying the egg is singing. Could be Mabel was wanting a turn in the nesting box. I think it is just a "flock" thing. I have a flock of 5 and a flock of 2 and in both flocks, when one does something all the others want to/do the same thing. When pullets first begin to lay it does take them a little bit to get all the kinks out of their systems but once they do get everything going they will lay consistently for their breed. Congratulations on your first eggs!

The one in the pic is a Rhode Island Red. Just the production kind, not the heritage or the show kind. She's the one who waited 6 days for her second egg. She lays 5 a week for us now. When one of ours is in the egg box, the others will sometimes carry on a little. I always thought it was them calling for her to come out. They like to be together. When one is not with them, they'll call or cluck.
