I am very excited to report Ms. Comet (my 19 week old golden comet) laid her first egg, in the nest box

Today she is back in the nest where I left the wood egg and she is all poofed up on top of it and WON'T let any of the others into the coop. She goes banana's whenever someone attempts to. Can she be going Broody? Should I now remove the wooden eggs now that she knows where to lay her eggs?

congratulations on the egg! I have two 16 week old GC and am anxiously awaiting my first egg. I have a question: you mentioned that your one hen won't let the others into the coop. do your chickens leave their coop and free range? I am wondering because mine free range in my backyard during the day and only go into the coop at night, so I am hoping that when they start laying they will use the nest box inside the coop (which they currently ignore, even though I have straw and golf balls in it) and not lay in the bushes where i can't find them.

I highly doubt she's going broody already. Give it some time. The egg laying process can occasionally take a while, and sometimes they just don't want anyone else around while they are doing it.

Actually mine have a fenced in run. They didn't show ANY interest in the nest until only days before she began to lay (got a second egg today). From what I've read about other free rangers though, they say that you should keep them in the coop until around noon when they've all finished laying otherwise they'll lay God knows where and you'll never know they are even laying eggs.

Good luck with your Comets. My other one is doing the squat big time so hopefully she'll start to lay any day as well.

Ya, I guess Broody was a big fat NO...thank goodness...she was just looking for some privacy so she could lay her SECOND egg in a row! I'm so proud of her. Hope she keeps it up.

Here is a picture of my daughter taking the first bite from our first egg. We scrambled it up and everyone had a bite...small egg so only one bite each.
